German AI Industry Gains Momentum with Strategic Acquisitions by Docuware and Miro

In 2024 and early 2026, two prominent acquisitions have intensified German involvement in the emerging AI landscape. Docuware, a digital document management firm part of the Ricoh Group, acquired Saarbrücken-based AI start-up Natif.ai in 2024 for a speculated double-digit million euro sum. Natif.ai, founded in 2020, specializes in deep learning–based optical character recognition (OCR) for automated document analysis, having processed over one million documents for about 100 clients while employing around 70 staff. This acquisition transformed Natif.ai into Docuware’s AI research and development hub, reinforcing the firm’s technological capabilities. Manuel Zapp, a founder, highlighted Saarland University’s role in providing top AI talent vital to Natif.ai’s success.

Further bolstering Germany's AI sector, Miro, an AI innovation workspace with over 100 million users globally, acquired Reforge, a platform offering AI-driven training and frameworks for product teams. The acquisition includes Reforge’s learning platform and team, intending to enhance Miro’s collaborative AI workflow platform specifically geared toward product development. Miro’s CEO, Andrey Khusid, emphasized the need to accelerate product development with strategic focus, stating, "The greatest opportunity we have is not just to be faster – it is to go faster in the right direction." Reforge’s founder Brian Balfour pointed to the merger's role in swiftly closing skills gaps in AI prototyping and strategy.

These acquisitions demonstrate how German companies are integrating advanced AI capabilities within traditional and new platforms, driving innovation and positioning Germany as a significant player in the global AI economy.
