German Leaders Criticize US Easing of Russian Oil Sanctions Amid Iran War

Germany is responding with skepticism and criticism to the United States' decision to temporarily relax sanctions on Russian oil due to the Iran war. The US move, allowing the purchase of oil shipments already at sea for 30 days, aims to alleviate oil shortages caused by the conflict. However, key German political figures view this step as problematic.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz voiced strong disapproval, describing the decision as "wrong" and accusing it of benefiting Russia by potentially funding its war efforts. Merz highlighted that while there is an oil price issue, there is no actual shortage of supply, casting doubt on the US rationale behind the sanctions relief. He reaffirmed Germany's steadfast support for Ukraine and made clear that Germany will not participate in the Iran conflict nor deploy troops to the Middle East. Furthermore, Merz underlined Germany's focus on ending the war and expressed a need for clarity from Washington regarding their strategy going forward.

German Economic Minister Katherina Reiche echoed concerns about rising domestic pressure within the US to ease sanctions further, fearing increased financial support for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil also emphasized the critical importance of maintaining sanctions to prevent Russia from exploiting the situation.

The move has been criticized more broadly as well, with former diplomat Christoph Heusgen condemning the US decision as disregarding international law and alliances. Contrasting these views, the right-wing AfD party, led by Alice Weidel, welcomed the US relaxation of sanctions and called for Germany to adopt similar policies, including the resumption of oil imports from Russia.

During a state visit to Norway, Merz also discussed how the Iran war impacts European security and energy supplies, underscoring Germany's refusal to become involved militarily. He met with Bundeswehr soldiers engaged in NATO exercises, reflecting heightened security considerations in light of geopolitical tensions.

Germany's political consensus thus remains firm: supporting Ukraine, avoiding entanglement in the Iran conflict, and questioning the prudence of the US easing sanctions on Russia at this critical time.
