Union Berlin Embraces ‘Playoff Atmosphere’ as They Prepare for Köln Double-Header

1. FC Union Berlin, positioned 17th in the Bundesliga, is experiencing a resurgence with an unbeaten streak of three matches despite their league struggles. After a 1-0 win against SV Elversberg and a resilient 1-1 draw against Augsburg — achieved while playing with ten men for roughly 70 minutes following Felix Uduokhai's red card — the team approaches a crucial double-header against FC Köln with renewed optimism.

The fixtures include a DFB-Pokal match on Tuesday at 20:45, followed by a Bundesliga encounter five days later. Rani Khedira likened these intense back-to-back matches to Champions League playoffs, highlighting the critical role of recovery time. Union’s historical DFB-Pokal record is modest; their best result was reaching the final in 2001, ending in a loss to Schalke 04. However, they made the semifinals in 2022 before falling to RB Leipzig and now aim to reach the round of 16 again.

Coach Mauro Lustrinelli, making his DFB-Pokal debut, praised the team’s solidarity and resilience. Despite uncertainty over Uduokhai’s availability due to injury, players like Janik Haberer are encouraged by a re-strengthened defense and the team’s unyielding spirit. Haberer stated, “We are again annoyingly compact in defense.” This resilience offers hope for Union Berlin as they face this pivotal double challenge against Köln.
