German Mittelstand Stays Cautious on Financing Amid Economic Uncertainty
Despite improved bank credit access overall, German Mittelstand shows declining loan demand amid economic uncertainty and strict lending conditions in late 2026.
Key details
- Access to bank loans improved in Q3 2026 for companies overall.
- Large companies increased credit demand, Mittelstand's demand declined to lowest since 2021.
- 36% of Mittelstand firms see banks as restrictive in lending negotiations.
- Sustainability is increasingly discussed in credit talks, especially for larger Mittelstand companies.
In the third quarter of 2026, access to bank loans for German companies improved overall, with larger corporations increasing their loan inquiries by 3.1 percentage points to 30.6%. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), or Mittelstand, displayed a declining credit demand, dropping to 19%, the lowest since summer 2021. This cautious stance is driven by ongoing economic uncertainties and unresolved succession issues, according to Dr. Dirk Schumacher, Chief Economist at KfW. Despite banks becoming somewhat less restrictive, 36% of Mittelstand companies still perceive them as stringent in lending negotiations, above the average of previous years. Large businesses also experienced easier credit access but 27% noted continued restrictive conditions. KfW Research projects a 1.5% economic growth for 2027, stressing that sustained recovery is essential for broader credit relaxation. Moreover, sustainability has become a growing focus in financing talks, especially for larger Mittelstand firms, with 37% encountering sustainability discussions in loan negotiations. KfW calls for increased support to help smaller enterprises meet these environmental criteria. Meanwhile, the fragile economic recovery is hindered by high energy and raw material costs and bureaucratic challenges, with only 24% of businesses rating their situation as good, while 26% report adverse conditions, especially within trade and industry sectors. The cautious financing behavior of the Mittelstand reflects these broader headwinds, underscoring a hesitancy to invest amid prevailing risks.
