Germany and Poland Mark 35 Years of Friendship with New Initiative and Reflect on Evolving Partnership

Germany and Poland are celebrating the 35th anniversary of the German-Polish Neighborhood Treaty, a milestone reflecting decades of cooperation and evolving diplomatic relations. To commemorate this event, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport is launching the Deutsch-Polnischen Freundschaftspass, offering 30,000 young adults aged 18 to 27 the opportunity to travel sustainably between the two countries. This special Interrail pass provides seven flexible travel days within the neighboring country and includes a free round trip in the traveler’s home country, emphasizing European cooperation and climate-friendly mobility. Applications open in mid-September, with passes valid from November 2026 through October 2027.

The anniversary celebrations highlight both progress and challenges in German-Polish relations. Poland now considers itself an equal partner to Germany, expressing criticism in a friendly yet firm manner, signaling a shift in dynamic that reflects increasing Polish self-confidence. However, Poland also voiced dissatisfaction over its perceived marginalization in discussions about Ukraine, underscoring persistent complexities between the neighbors.

Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder emphasized the importance of promoting European ideals and strengthening bilateral ties through initiatives like the Friendship Pass. Polish Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak linked the launch to the centennial of Polish State Railways, encouraging sustainable travel and cultural exchange among youth.

As the two countries reflect on 35 years of good neighborly relations, the Friendship Pass symbolically fosters personal encounters and deeper understanding among younger generations, while diplomatic dialogue continues addressing both cooperation and points of contention.
