Germany and UK Strengthen Economic Ties Six Years After Brexit

Six years after the UK's departure from the European Union, Germany and the United Kingdom are committed to deepening their economic relations, signaling a renewed partnership amidst global uncertainties. According to German Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche, trade relations have stabilized, with the UK re-entering Germany's top ten trading partners. In 2025, trade volume between the two nations reached approximately 118 billion euros, with Germany exporting 80 billion euros worth of goods to the UK and importing 33 billion euros from the UK.

Reiche highlighted that numerous companies operate in both countries, contributing to mutual prosperity, and expressed confidence in the potential for further strengthening these ties. She emphasized the need for a new cooperative framework in the post-Brexit era, criticizing the European Union's "Made in Europe" strategy as inadequate, and urged the British government to engage constructively with the EU Commission.

The economic landscape has shifted dramatically due to recent global crises, shattering the previous illusion that markets could function on "autopilot." Reiche pointed to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy supply route, as a stark example of emerging challenges requiring resilient supply chains and robust access to critical raw materials.

Supporting this collaborative spirit, British Economic Minister Peter Kyle announced a significant agreement with Germany on the procurement of rare earth elements, underscoring the importance of rebuilding bilateral relations. These developments build upon the Kensington Agreement, signed in July 2025, designed to enhance cooperation across defense, security, economic, health, and cultural sectors.

As Germany and the UK navigate the post-Brexit landscape, their shared focus on trade and technology development, combined with pragmatic responses to geopolitical risks, marks a decisive step toward renewed economic partnership and resilience.
