Germany and USA Strengthen Arms Cooperation with New Defense Agreement and Equipment Deliveries

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth signed a declaration of intent in Washington to intensify arms cooperation between Germany and the United States. The agreement aims to expand joint development, production, and licensing of military equipment to enhance the supply of weapons and ammunition within NATO, with growing reliance on German manufacturing. Hegseth praised Germany's efforts toward increasing defense spending, approaching NATO's five percent goal, and emphasized that the agreement will accelerate the delivery of powerful systems to allied forces.

A significant aspect of the deal involves the delivery of advanced weapons: the US has pledged the sale of Tomahawk cruise missiles to Germany, while Pistorius is set to receive the Bundeswehr’s first F-35 stealth fighter jets from Lockheed Martin's Texas facility during his visit. Although discussions at the Pentagon were positive, Pistorius noted that some details regarding the Tomahawk missile deliveries remain to be clarified.

The cooperation comes amid a high need for weapons and equipment within the NATO alliance, aiming at faster readiness and better maintenance capabilities. Additionally, the US is advancing plans to rename its Department of Defense to the Department of War, with initial legislative approval pending in the Senate.

This new phase of transatlantic defense collaboration reflects Germany's growing role in NATO’s collective security and highlights its expanding industrial capabilities in military production. The agreement underlines shared strategic priorities and the commitment to strengthening European and transatlantic defense ties through joint technology and equipment investment.
