Germany and USA Strengthen Defense Cooperation with New Arms Agreement and Military Developments

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has kicked off a key trip to the United States by signing a significant arms cooperation agreement with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The pact aims to boost the supply of weapons, ammunition, and equipment sourced from German production lines to meet NATO's operational demands, with a special emphasis on expanding maintenance and repair capabilities.

Hegseth lauded Germany’s recent strides in defense spending, noting that it is approaching the NATO target of 2% of GDP, a marked improvement from previous years amid former criticisms from Washington. Pistorius described the talks at the Pentagon as constructive, with specific discussions addressing the delivery details of the agreed Tomahawk cruise missiles to Germany.

Significantly for the Bundeswehr, Pistorius is scheduled to receive Germany’s first F-35 fighter jet at Lockheed Martin’s Texas facility, symbolizing a critical upgrade in Germany's air capabilities. Currently, Germany hosts around 38,000 US troops, making it the United States’ principal military hub in Europe. Facilities such as Ramstein Air Base and several training areas underline this strategic importance.
