Germany Commits €3.4 Billion to Acquire Tomahawk Missiles and Long-Range Launch Systems from the US

Germany is set to significantly enhance its military capabilities by investing approximately €3.4 billion in the procurement of long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles and mobile Typhon ground launch systems from the United States. This deal enables the Bundeswehr to target sites up to 1800 kilometers away, marking a strategic expansion in its defense reach.

The initiative, initially budgeted near €1 billion, reflects increased German Defense Ministry projections. It includes the acquisition of Tomahawk Block VB missiles, which feature advanced capabilities such as mid-flight course corrections and dynamic targeting, making them capable of striking a variety of ground targets with precision. Alongside the missiles, Germany will receive the US ground-launched Typhon systems, although patents and sensitive technologies will remain under US control. German industries may participate in manufacturing these systems.

This procurement follows the 2019 dissolution of the INF Treaty, which formerly prohibited land-based intermediate and short-range missiles in Europe, effectively opening the door for Germany to pursue such armaments.

The deal emerged after a diplomatic rift between Berlin and Washington led to the Pentagon suspending plans for a US Typhon unit in Germany, motivating Germany to expedite its own long-range weapons acquisition. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has affirmed Germany's openness to deploying the Typhon system.

Simultaneously, Germany is engaging in collaborative European defense projects, including one led by France aiming to develop new long-range weapons with ranges of 1000 to 2000 kilometers by the 2030s. Additional cooperative efforts with the UK focus on creating precision-guided weapons with ranges exceeding 2000 kilometers, highlighting Germany's commitment to strengthening both national and European defense capabilities over the coming decade.
