Germany Faces Record Heatwave with Health Risks and Storm Threats

Germany is currently enduring a significant heatwave in June 2026, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels this year. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued expanded heat warnings for nearly all of Germany, excluding some Baltic Sea coastal areas. On June 19, the western and southwestern regions could see temperatures reaching up to 38 degrees Celsius, while other parts of the country are expected to experience sultry conditions between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius.

On June 18, temperatures exceeded 35 degrees Celsius for the first time this year, with Saarbrücken recording a peak of 35.6 degrees. The DWD also cautioned about potential severe thunderstorms starting from midday in southern Baden and Swabia, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds over 100 kilometers per hour.

Health risks posed by the extreme heat are a major concern, especially for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and homeless. Verena Bentele, President of the VdK social association, highlighted that extreme heat can be as deadly as extreme cold. The German Red Cross urged for better protection for homeless people, advocating for public cooling spaces and accessible drinking fountains.

Preparations are underway for major outdoor events like the Southside and Hurricane Festivals, with organizers ensuring adequate shaded areas and drinking water availability to protect festival-goers.

Authorities recommend that individuals stay hydrated and keep indoor spaces cool to mitigate the health impact. The combination of intense heat and the threat of severe thunderstorms presents a complex weather challenge for Germany's population this week.
