Germany's Education Crisis Deepens as PISA 2026 Scores Hit All-Time Low

Germany's performance in the 2026 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) study has deteriorated to its lowest point since the survey began, causing widespread concern among education officials and society. The latest results place Germany near the average of approximately 90 countries in mathematics, reading, and science, a significant decline from the initial 2000 assessment.

According to the study, the proportion of low-performing German students has surged since 2015: a 17 percentage point increase in mathematics, 15 points in reading, and 10 points in science. Furthermore, 52% of German students reported that teacher shortages adversely affected their education, a figure notably higher than the OECD average of 39%. Education Minister Prien described the findings as "alarming," emphasizing that the education system is failing to unlock students' potential and that social background increasingly dictates learning success.

The study also highlights a troubling disconnect: while 77% of German students express curiosity, one-third see school as a waste of time, compounded by widespread digital distractions during lessons. Economic representatives reacted strongly, calling for political action to ensure students graduate equipped with essential skills for the modern workforce.

These disquieting findings coincide with other regional concerns such as rising security issues and political shifts, but the educational decline stands out as a clear indicator of systemic challenges. Despite ongoing debates, the importance of education in public discourse appears to be waning in Germany, raising alarms about long-term social mobility and the nation’s economic future.

The PISA study, which included 6,659 German students this year, continues to be a crucial benchmark of educational achievement globally. As Germany reflects on these sobering results, urgency grows among policymakers and educators to address the root causes and to revitalize the country’s education system before the consequences deepen further.
