IG Metall Urges Boost in Domestic Production to Safeguard Jobs in Germany's Metal and Electrical Sectors

In light of persistent challenges in Germany’s metal and electrical industries, IG Metall’s chair, Christiane Benner, has called on companies to increase production within Germany and the wider European Union to preserve jobs and sustain competitiveness. Addressing 'Bild', Benner stressed the crucial role of domestic production in securing local value creation, stating, "Whoever sells in Europe and Germany must also produce here. Who else will buy cars in Germany in the long term?"

Benner highlighted significant job losses in key areas such as research and development, attributing this to companies relocating high-tech roles to countries like China. She criticized the widespread corporate view that innovation is a costly burden rather than an investment.

Furthermore, Benner urged the German government to improve industrial conditions through more robust support measures. While acknowledging positive strides such as social tiered incentives for electric vehicle purchases, she pointed out persistent gaps including insufficient charging infrastructure, high energy costs, lack of affordable electricity for charging, and the need for expanded battery production support.

Her message underscores the necessity of a strategic, well-supported approach to retain and develop Germany’s industrial competitiveness amid global shifts. Benner believes with the right framework, German industry can thrive despite current adversities.
