Rising Cocoa Prices Double Chocolate Costs, Slashing Christmas Chocolate Sales in Germany

Doubling chocolate prices due to rising cocoa costs are leading to lower sales of Christmas chocolates and discounts by German discounters.

    Key details

  • • Chocolate prices in Germany have doubled due to increasing cocoa costs.
  • • Sales of Christmas-themed chocolates like chocolate Santas have declined significantly.
  • • Discount retailers such as Aldi and Lidl are offering heavy discounts to boost sales.
  • • Consumers are unaccustomed to higher chocolate prices after years of low costs.

The recent surge in cocoa prices has caused chocolate prices to double, significantly impacting sales of Christmas-themed chocolates such as chocolate Santas in Germany. Customers are deterred by the high costs, resulting in a surplus of unsold holiday chocolate products. Discount supermarket chains like Aldi and Lidl have responded by offering substantial discounts in an effort to stimulate demand.

Professor Stephan Rüschen of the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg Heilbronn explains that the increase in chocolate prices is driven by rising raw material costs, particularly cocoa. He adds that consumers have been accustomed to low chocolate prices for a long time, which has made the price hikes particularly challenging for the holiday market.

This development has resulted in a notable decline in the sales of seasonal chocolate items, prompting retailers to adjust their pricing strategies. The holiday season, typically a peak period for Christmas-themed chocolate sales, is thus facing a downturn due to these economic pressures.
