Safety Concerns Mar Karneval Festivities in Germany Amid Knife Attacks and Costume Recall

The traditionally joyous Karneval celebrations in Germany are facing serious safety issues, highlighted by a spate of violent knife attacks and a significant product safety recall for children's costumes in Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Over just three days, authorities reported three violent incidents involving knives in the region. On February 12, a 16-year-old Afghan was arrested after stabbing a 20-year-old man during a dispute at a carnival party in Grefrath. The victim survived and is now stable. Then on February 14, during a parade in Leverkusen, a 20-year-old man stabbed a 15-year-old boy in the thigh, causing severe injuries that required emergency surgery. Later that night in Wuppertal, a 19-year-old attacked three men on a bus with a knife, seriously injuring one and lightly wounding two others before fleeing. These incidents have raised alarm over public safety, prompting calls for heightened police presence and potential knife-free zones at large public gatherings during Karneval. The violent acts have cast a shadow over the usually carefree festivities, blending tension with traditional celebration.

Compounding safety concerns, a recall was issued for three children’s Karneval costumes sold at Aldi Nord stores in Mülheim an der Ruhr. The costumes, branded Lily & Dan and sized XS (92-104) meant for toddlers aged 2 to 4, include a racer suit, a firefighter outfit, and a ladybug cape. The recall was announced on February 15 by supplier Florett Textil GmbH & Co. KG after it was discovered that the sewn-on Velcro fasteners could loosen, posing choking hazards due to small detachable parts. Customers can return these costumes to Aldi stores without a receipt for a full refund. Other sizes and products from the supplier remain unaffected.

These concurrent safety issues—violent assaults and product risks—have overshadowed this year’s Karneval, traditionally known for its spirit of freedom and joy. Public safety officials and retailers are responding swiftly to mitigate risks during the celebrations.
