    Key details

  • • Three men arrested for planning a Hamas attack in Berlin.
  • • Weapons seized include an AK-47 and multiple pistols.
  • • The suspects have been under surveillance for weeks prior to their arrest.

An attempted terrorist attack associated with Hamas in Berlin has been thwarted following the arrest of three suspects. The Federal Prosecutor's Office, known as the Generalbundesanwalt, reported that the men, two from Lebanon and one from Syria, were detained after weeks of surveillance by law enforcement agencies. They are believed to have been planning an attack targeting Jewish or Israeli institutions since the summer of 2023.

Authorities seized significant weapons during the operation, including an AK-47, several handguns, and a large quantity of ammunition, which investigators suspect were meant for the attacks. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt, addressing the situation, described it as a credible and serious terrorist threat that has now been neutralized. He highlighted the ongoing risks to Jewish communities in Germany, stating, "The threat to Jewish life is concrete."

The suspects, aged between 30 and 45, were reportedly affiliated with Hamas and might have been part of a broader network operating within Europe. This incident underscores rising concerns about domestic security in light of an earlier context where similar arrests had revealed additional Hamas weapon caches in Europe. Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig remarked on the severity of the allegations, asserting that the findings indicate a substantial threat to Jewish populations in Germany and emphasize the country's need to combat terrorism effectively.
