US to Withdraw 5,000 Troops from Germany Amid Rising Transatlantic Tensions

The United States has announced the withdrawal of approximately 5,000 troops from Germany within the next year, marking a significant shift in transatlantic military presence and strategy. This troop reduction was confirmed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and reflects a broader review of the US military footprint in Europe, amid strained relations between Washington and European allies.

The withdrawal follows President Donald Trump's increase of tariffs on European Union cars and trucks to 25% and his critical remarks toward German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, particularly concerning Germany’s stance on Iran and nuclear weapons negotiations. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell detailed that the troop pullout is expected to conclude within six to twelve months.

German officials have responded pragmatically to the development. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius acknowledged the move as foreseeable and emphasized that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security. He also stressed the importance of NATO strengthening its European dimension to preserve transatlantic unity. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul highlighted the strategic significance of US bases like Ramstein Air Base, affirming Germany's preparedness to manage the withdrawal while maintaining these critical installations.

Political reactions in Germany include concerns voiced by CDU politician Michael Grosse-Brömer, who warned that the drawdown could undermine NATO's deterrence posture and should eventually be balanced by strengthened European forces. Additionally, SPD's Ralf Stegner linked the troop withdrawal to Chancellor Merz’s public criticism of US policy in the Middle East, suggesting a political motivation behind the decision.

Currently, around 86,000 US soldiers are stationed across Europe, with approximately 39,000 based in Germany at key installations such as EUCOM in Stuttgart and Ramstein Air Base in Rheinland-Pfalz. The troop reduction reflects a reassessment within the US Department of Defense about military needs in Europe amid ongoing geopolitical challenges, including concerns over Russia's aggression since 2022.
