Rheinland-Pfalz Retains MPK Chair Amid Political Tensions in Sachsen-Anhalt

Rheinland-Pfalz will continue its presidency of the Ministerpräsidentenkonferenz (MPK) for another year, postponing the expected handover to Sachsen-Anhalt scheduled for October. This unanimous decision by the state leaders aims to circumvent the complications arising from the recent state election in Sachsen-Anhalt, where the AfD nearly secured an absolute majority, creating uncertainty around government formation.

The AfD’s strong electoral performance prompted political calls for Sachsen-Anhalt to relinquish the MPK chair.
