Rise in Violence Against LGBTQI Individuals in Germany Highlights Societal Backlash Following Berlin CSD Attack

The recent attack during the 2026 Christopher Street Day (CSD) event in Berlin, where a car was driven into the crowd, has underscored a disturbing rise in violence against LGBTQI individuals in Germany. On July 26, 2026, authorities reported that the suspect involved in this attack is deceased, intensifying ongoing investigations around this hate crime.

Data from the Bundeskriminalamt reveal a nearly tenfold increase in crimes motivated by sexual orientation since 2010. In 2025 alone, there were almost six reported cases of anti-LGBTQI violence every day. Experts, including Charly Krenn from the Queer Anti-Violence Center in North Rhine-Westphalia, link this surge partly to the increased visibility of queer individuals. However, many incidents remain unreported; a 2020 study found that 96% of LGBTQI people experienced hate speech and 87% had suffered physical or sexual assaults without reporting them out of fear of inadequate police response.

Beyond visibility, the rise in hate crimes is also seen as a backlash against the LGBTQI community’s rights progress. The political landscape reflects this tension, with anti-queer parties seeing electoral success and contentious debates surrounding laws like the self-determination law. Despite historic milestones such as the repeal of Paragraph 175 and the establishment of the General Equal Treatment Act, society continues to grapple with discrimination and safety for queer individuals.

Bernd Gaiser, co-founder of the Berlin CSD, emphasized the ongoing struggle for recognition and security for LGBTQI people amidst these challenges. The tragic incident at this year’s CSD event serves as a stark reminder of these persistent issues.
