A recent public debate in Germany has centered around CDU leader Friedrich Merz's controversial remarks on migration and its effects on the country's urban image. Merz criticized migrants without permanent residency who do not work or adhere to local rules, claiming these issues have damaged city atmospheres and that the government is now addressing past migration policy failures.

According to a ZDF-Politbarometer survey by the Mannheim Research Group, 63% of respondents agree with Merz's specific comments on migrants' impact on city life. This support varies by age, with only 42% of 18-34-year-olds in agreement versus around 70% of those aged 35-59 and over 60. Notably, despite the concerns raised, over two-thirds of Germans report feeling safe in public spaces, and only 18% perceive problems with refugees in their neighborhoods.

In response to the ongoing debate, the SPD has urged for a government summit at the Chancellor’s office to urgently discuss this sensitive topic, aiming to find constructive approaches to migration’s effects on urban communities. This call underlines the political significance the debate has gained nationwide.

The survey, conducted on October 23 with 1,038 eligible voters, distinguishes between Merz's targeted critique of certain migrant groups and his broader comments about city image, clarifying that most support aligns with the former. The discussion unfolds as German politics grapples with migration policy's societal repercussions and public perception.

This debate reflects a generational divide and varied public sentiments, illuminating the complex challenges Germany faces regarding integration and urban cohesion.
