  • • Multiple traffic accidents reported including fatalities and serious injuries on highways A46, A7, and B173.
  • • Deutsche Bahn operates with speed reductions and faces delays; significant flight cancellations at Frankfurt airport.
  • • School closures and public warnings issued amid ongoing dangerous conditions, with improvements expected by Tuesday.

Germany is currently grappling with severe winter weather conditions caused by the interaction of storm systems 'Elli' and 'Gunda,' resulting in widespread icy roads and significant transport disruptions. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued level three warnings for severe black ice particularly across eastern and southeastern parts of the country, including northeastern Bavaria and regions near the Polish border, with conditions expected to last until Tuesday morning.

The icy conditions are a product of warm rain from storm 'Gunda' falling onto deeply frozen ground, creating a dangerous layer of undercooled rain that freezes on contact. This has led to hazardous driving conditions, prompting motorists to exercise extreme caution and adhere to winter tire requirements.

Multiple traffic accidents have been reported nationwide; notably, on the A46 in Nordrhein-Westfalen, accidents caused injuries and highway closures. The A7 saw over ten collisions including a mass pileup of eight vehicles injuring four persons, two seriously. In Nürnberg, icy roads led to one fatal accident, while a major collision on the B173 in Oberfranken injured 13 people. Schleswig-Holstein also reported numerous slippery road accidents, resulting in closures of major highways such as the A7 and A23.

Rail and air travel have likewise been affected: Deutsche Bahn has implemented speed reductions between Köln and Frankfurt and is experiencing delays and cancellations especially in northern regions. A regional train derailment in Sachsen fortunately caused no injuries. Additionally, a Danish train stalled near Flensburg due to brake issues in freezing conditions. Frankfurt airport experienced significant flight cancellations, with approximately 100 flights cancelled, although Munich and Nuremberg faced fewer disruptions.

School attendance has been disrupted in several federal states including Nordrhein-Westfalen, Niedersachsen, Bremen, Hessen, and Bayern, with some schools closing due to the hazardous conditions. Parents in Brandenburg were given discretion over sending their children to school.

Authorities and emergency services are on high alert, with the ADAC assisting stranded motorists despite possible longer wait times. Weather experts predict a gradual improvement with milder temperatures and thawing expected by Tuesday. However, warnings remain in effect with the potential for further disruptions before conditions improve.

This winter weather episode highlights the ongoing challenges posed by freezing rain and ice, impacting daily life, transport safety, and public services across Germany.
